What is a Business Mentor? Why do I need one?
Somebody asked me that question not too long ago, and it really struck home. How many people were asking themselves the same question? And, just how do I answer it?
The definition from Dictionary.com is:
men•tor /'menter, -tor/
–noun
1.a wise and trusted counselor or teacher.
2.an influential senior sponsor or supporter.
Okay, that's clear enough. Now, 'Why do I need One?'
Have you ever had any question about your business ideas, about your chances of success, about your own ability to become a successful business owner, any question at all that started with words like these:
Okay, that was probably unfair; but it certainly highlights why you might need a mentor!
You can 'learn from your mistakes' (and we all make mistakes!). Or you can use the experience and knowledge someone has gained over years working in business start-ups, business planning, sales and marketing, and specialty growth/development operations, and AVOID making the same costly mistakes!
First, I strongly urge you to INVESTIGATE. Trust is a key factor in mentoring. You have no way to decide that hiring any given consultant or mentor is the right decision. Learn everything you can about a prospective mentor before you pay hard earned dollars for thier advice. Don't look for 'testimonials'; a good professional won't use them. Client confidentiality is a key factor for a mentor/consultant.
Let me offer one of my favorite 'rules': 'Time is the only irreplaceable asset we have...Once gone, it is gone forever'. Harsh, perhaps, but certainly true. The longer you wait to get started, the longer you wait to reach the goal. Another question to consider: 'If you do nothing, what will change between now and next week except the date?'
The key to making things happen is to take action! But, aimless action is worse than lethargy. You NEED a plan; and the more experience and outright knowledge you can bring to bear on the plan, the more likely it will lead in the right direction. If you are going to start a business, build a sales team, develop a business plan, apply for funding, 'take the next step', every day you wait is costing you money.
Nobody is going to make it happen FOR you!
You are the bottom line in your success.
And my Favorite Analogy: ( I Like Poker - So much like Business )
If you DO NOT bet, you cannot win!
If you PLACE a bet, you can ALWAYS lose!
The secret then, is long term: Never bet against the odds, and never bet more at one time than you can afford to lose. Of course, the more you know ABOUT the odds, the better your chances!
